Edge Of God eBook Michael Patrick Lewis

Edge of God is a sometimes snarky, sometimes emotional, romantic and humorous romp through the universe.

Edge of God is also a story of redemption.

The story follows the very promiscuous Kozi Iyemo and her exploits as a rebellious young woman born into a wealthy and politically powerful family. Highly intelligent, with a degree in Astronautical Engineering, Iyemo struggles with her personal demons while those demons are exploited and publicly enlarged due to her high-profile family ties.

Finding it difficult to live on her home planet, Iyemo, confused and emotionally alone believes that distance and isolation will solve her problems. She soon learns that her inner struggle may need the help of others, including a higher power.

Iyemo’s character is developed well throughout the story. Other characters are also well defined, adding humor, humility, sadness, deceit, and true friendship. There are moments where I laughed out loud and moments I became teary-eyed.

Michael Lewis introduced a new world with varying people and languages. This is tough to pull off, and there were common and current colloquial expressions that felt out of place.

The novel could have been shorter and still get the story across to the readers. It was a huge read and difficult to follow at times as the point of view (persons/narrator) could be an abrupt or sudden change. A simple interjection of thought tossed in. Some of this could be construed as some of the charm, but at times, I had to reread sections to be sure I understood who was talking.

Edge of God could also use some professional editing. Wrong or missing words would pop out every now and again and distract me.

Overall, I enjoyed Edge of God, but you had to hang in there to understand where it was going and grasp the unique tongue-in-cheek writing style.

Edge Of God eBook Michael Patrick Lewis Reviews

Iyemo, spoiled brat and daughter of one of the universe’s most powerful leaders, is sent on a planet much less advanced than her own to do repairs. Albeit a brilliant and inventive engineer, she does little more than fix toilets, at least for starters.

That, and sleep with boys from various other galaxies, almost simultaneously, given the fairly frequent frenzied pace of this novel. She is, in fact, more assiduous with sex than she is with work. Despite her immaturity, she’s got a heart of gold (of sorts) and manages to make a very good friend in the person of Gomi. We’ll discover later that amnesiac Gomi comes from a very advanced planet as well. And one that, unlike Iyemo’s, has banished slavery.

Although humor and satire inhabit the work, there is a bit of heavy-handedness in the way this author handles some topics. The numerous chapters on sex, if fun at moments, get repetitious and unnecessary. Some more relevant subjects, such as aforementioned slavery, or racism, could have been addressed in a far more incisive way. Same thing with characters like liberator Ahmad. I would have enjoyed more of his presence. Others characters are as colorless as a bunch of worms on damp soil and should have been given to the birds way before this went into print. There is much pruning to do in this book. It could have been cut in half and ended being a much more powerful, meaningful work. On occasion, one gets under the impression that the author gets satisfied with his own little jokes, and that’s too bad. A good editor is pretty much the fairy godmother and is able to transform potential into something shinier, even delightful. Of the delightful this book has moments. Particularly at the beginning. But Lewis spoils this by adding, adding, adding. I have written this time and again, and I haven’t been the only one. Less is more.

So save money and use that editor. I can’t stress that enough. Without one, an Indie author cannot compete with the rest of the market. For the rest of the market uses editors. With one of these, overindulgence and overabundance will be smashed, and good riddance! I have been there. I have sworn at and insulted my own editors (when I was by myself), only to bless them and kiss them later on (also when I was by myself). With this book, the editor would have killed, say, the awkwardly divided chapters and the skipping from one topic to the next with basically no transition.

All in all, it is not a bad novel. Lewis’ overall tone of the novel is the right one. His pace is by and large correct. Fine tuning, shortening, and removing a good deal of these chapters will help. Lewis is also quite good at creating names for planets and people. But a gardening attitude (trim-trim-prune), as mentioned, is necessary. And an S&M attitude (Ouch! Ouch! The whip of the editor is beating up my words but, in the end, it feels s-o-o-o g-o-o-o-o-d!) would do such wonders.
I’m a Michael Patrick Lewis fan. This is the third book of his I’ve read. He’s a talented writer who mixes both philosophical and very human insights (or in this case aliens) with a sharp writing style. His characters are always so real, both likeable and flawed, they almost jump off the page. I really enjoyed the Edge of God. It’s definitely a soul book with spiritual yearning at its heart. The rich stew of musings about every aspect of life, often tongue in cheek, at times almost tripped up the storyline for me, but the adventure was always intelligent and wildly entertaining. I look forward to the next book.
I thought this was easily the author's best work to date! It's a story of redemption, but much of it is tongue in cheek, such as the Earth Edition on the cover suggests. The heroine goes through much of the book as a lost soul with a kind heart. The daughter of one of the rulers of her planet, she goes through a string of sexual partners and drug encounters trying to find her way. Her work ethic is almost nonexistent, but she tells herself that it can't be helped. Worse, being a minor celebrity, her mistakes are broadcast for everyone to see and judge. The end of the story is mostly predictable, but left me feeling good for having read the story. I'd recommend it for just that reason alone, but Mr. Lewis' writing style and creativity are also good reasons for reading it.
