This story touched me on multiple levels. In the beginning, I was drawn to the sudden influx of money to the family and the changes in their lives, especially those of the children. Theo is not what one would expect to be a hero, being bullied and escaping into books whenever possible. And Marie's depiction of the bratty little sister is genius. While Theo pretends to be indifferent, it is obvious that he and his sister miss the closeness their family has lost.

Waking up in a strange land straight from a fantasy novel should be the thrill of a lifetime, but Theo and Marie are in for a few surprises. Not everyone is glad to see them, and their strength of will and mettle are tested. Once they pass the test, Theo is charged with a task of monumental importance, when all he really wants to do is to go home. He is accompanied, not by a group of knights, but rather, by a group of misfits, known as contrary, due to a hink in Theo's Traveler or Ord Book, who are no more than children themselves. For a group of youngsters whose magic can be unpredictable, they give their all to help each other succeed cause it's the right thing to do.

This is a tale that can be enjoyed by both children and adults. In fact, it is a great read for families to share and take turns reading aloud. What a wonderful way to spend the evening, 30 minutes to an hour before getting ready for bed.

Theo Ellsworth is a young boy trying to fit into the pampered rich lifestyle placed upon him by his parents winning a lot of money. He and his pesky little sister, Marie, go to an expensive private school and their middle-class, but pleasant life no longer exists. They are the "nouveau rich" and bullying boys never let Theo forget it. As he buries himself in his one passion -- reading fantasy and other books, he finds a large heavy book with a spine that looks like brass; thick as a phonebook and covered in leather. Theo opens it with great expectations only to discover the entire book is empty pages.

He hurries to leave to pick up his sister and falls, causing one hand to become imprinted with the raised three triangle carving on the front of the book -- and his hand burns. The book is beyond weird, but Theo senses that the large tome wants him to have it, or so he convinces himself while slipping past the librarian, who doesn't seem to be able to see it. Theo explains how he found the book to Marie as she manipulates him into letting her sleep in his bedroom. He wakes up to find a horse breathing into his face and awakens Marie. The two siblings, not overly shocked by a horse in their room figure their parents must have bought it for them.

Even so, a horse with two horns protruding from its head and a large man in armor sitting on top of the animal that they now notice has two extra legs is a little strange. Stupefied and scared they realize they are no longer in their bedroom; instead on a hill in a lovely forest. They begin to walk, but a little man grabs Theo's hand and focuses on it. He's about two feet tall with wings and looks a little like a Christmas elf. He asks them what the word they said was and when Theo answers, "horse", he explains that in this place a horse is an escargot, this one being written by a Quaylish Knight. The strange little man named Noggin calls Lord Calvert, much to the Knight's annoyance.

Noggin addresses the knight, speaking in a Scottish brogue, flapping his wings in excitement. The knight asks Theo if what the little man says is true, and reprimands Marie for her impertinence in speaking to royalty, especially the Holder of the Tress of Alaria, keeper of the Sacred Trust and master of the Knights Foamcrest in Gossamer City -- and the Princess Fatima's right hand man. Theo's triangular shaped burn mark is The Travelers Mark of Tarad. But the knight is not convinced and hauls them off to the magical city, not hearing Noggin's excited cry as he finds the Journal book with them . . . only now much smaller. The city is filled with human-like people, each one stranger than the other; everything is colorful, oddly like the Land of Oz.

The Princess Fatima is near Theo's age, and energetic blue eyed beauty with a clear musical voice. The two siblings are brought before court due to the burn mark on Theo's hand -- a blasphemy to these strange people. The mark may complete the prophecy of a human appearing "to stem the tide, before the world became all good or all evil." Quaylund has enjoyed peace between the three gods ruling the land and the burn mark might just change all that. Will Theo succeed in balancing the tenuous thread between good and evil?

Author Scott McCloskey writes a charming action-packed fantasy with the magical tone of "The Never-ending Story." This book is sure to please preteen, YA, and adults of all ages with its enchanting saga. Theo and Marie may not be able to click "ruby red shoes" to return to their normal home . . . And do they really want to?

The Goldenwealth Light by author Scott McCloskey was a truly magical journey from beginning to end. When his family wins the lotto, Theo and his precocious little sister Marie soon find out that having money is not everything. Life changes drastically and unpleasantly for them as their parents become members of high society and spend less and less time with them. Theo faces bullying and retreats to the only comfort he knows--reading a good fantasy. When he discovers an old book in the library, his world and the world of his younger sister will be forever changed.

I enjoyed this book from beginning to end. The author has created characters that have their own unique and spirited ways of carrying the reader through the story. These are the type of protagonists that make you forget you are reading a book at all and pull you into their world right alongside them. Theo especially, was a character that I couldn't help but love. He is witty, funny and engaging, not to mention determined.

This was a good read for a lot of reasons. While many authors tend to dumb down their speech when writing for a YA audience, Scott McCloskey chose not to do this. His passages are neither overly wordy, nor are they too simple. When you read this, you can obviously tell that the author is educated, and I appreciated that. As an adult that reads quite a lot of YA books, it disturbs me when an author has to over indulge in explanation, I find it insulting to the YA audience. This book was written with the presumption that the audience is intelligent. I loved that.

Creativity This book is filled with it. There are creatures I have never seen before. When you read a lot of fantasy novels, this becomes important after while. I have grown tired of books that use the same basic five creatures relentlessly and it was refreshing to see an author come up with his own cast of original creatures.

As I got further into reading, I discovered that the plot here is not as simple and straightforward as it first seems. While there are a lot of things happening in this novel, the author manages to give you a mental map of sorts through his descriptions where by the end all of the parallels make sense and tie together seamlessly.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that as an adult, I really didn't find this book to have strict age boundaries. I think this is a work that you could enjoy at any age. I did. I look forward to reading the next book in this series. I highly recommend it to those who love magic, fantasy and an overall exciting read. Well done.
